IEC Registration: Importer Exporter Code from DGFT in India in Nagaur

An Import Export Code (IEC) is the 10-digit PAN-based code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), mandatory for any person or business that imports or exports goods or services from India. In Nagaur, where Makrana marble businesses generate significant export revenue — whether granite quarriers in Jalore, marble exporters in Rajsamand, textile exporters in Bhilwara, Kinnow exporters in Sri Ganganagar, or handicraft exporters in Jodhpur and Jaipur — an IEC is the essential first step to legal export operations. Without an IEC, customs will not allow goods to be shipped out of or into India. StartBizX handles IEC registration on the DGFT portal within 1-3 working days, with all documentation.

Detailed Scope & Process

What Is an Importer-Exporter Code?

The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 and the Foreign Trade Policy. It is linked to the PAN of the business, so one PAN holder has only one IEC. Customs authorities, banks, shipping lines and export promotion agencies use it to identify the importer or exporter in every transaction.

The IEC is a one-time registration. It does not expire and has no renewal fee in the traditional sense, but the DGFT requires the IEC holder to confirm and update the details on the portal once a year in the period the DGFT notifies, and an IEC that is not updated can be made inactive until it is. Because the IEC carries the details of the business, they should be kept current.

Who Needs an IEC?

  • A person who imports goods into India or exports goods from India for trade purposes is generally required to have an IEC.
  • Exporters and importers who wish to clear goods through customs, receive foreign exchange through banks against exports or claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, such as duty remission or export promotion schemes.
  • Service exporters, who generally do not need an IEC just to export services, but who do need one if they wish to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. Their banks or customers may also ask for it.
  • E-commerce exporters and merchants who ship goods abroad, and manufacturers and traders who sell to overseas buyers.

Some imports and exports are exempt, such as those for personal use that are not connected with trade or manufacture, and certain transactions by government departments and other categories the Foreign Trade Policy lists. We check whether your activity falls within the exemption before we apply.

What the IEC Application Involves

  • Applicant details: name, PAN, constitution, address and contact details of the business, along with the proprietor, partners or directors.
  • Authentication: the application is filed online on the DGFT portal, and it is verified through an Aadhaar-based or DSC-based authentication, depending on the applicant.
  • Bank details: a bank account in the name of the business, with a cancelled cheque or a bank certificate, so that it can be linked to the IEC.
  • Branches and addresses: if the business has branches, they can be added to the IEC.
  • Fee: a nominal government fee is paid on the portal, online. The fee is notified by the DGFT, so we confirm the current amount at the time.

When the application is approved, the IEC certificate is made available on the portal for download and printing.

Registrations That Go Along with IEC

The IEC is the starting point, and several other registrations often follow, depending on the business.

  • Customs and ICEGATE: registration for filing shipping bills and bills of entry, and for tracking customs documents.
  • Authorised Dealer (AD) code: registration of the bank's AD code with the customs for the port, so that export proceeds can be tracked.
  • Registration Cum Membership Certificate (RCMC): from the relevant export promotion council, for claiming certain benefits.
  • GST Letter of Undertaking (LUT): for exporting goods or services without paying IGST, which is filed on the GST portal.
  • Export schemes: such as the schemes for duty remission, advance authorisation or capital goods, which have their own applications and eligibility.

These are separate from the IEC application, and are not included unless agreed. We can help with them as follow-on services.

What Our IEC Registration Service Includes

  • Checking whether your activity needs an IEC, and whether an exemption applies.
  • Preparation of the application on the DGFT portal, with the details of the business, the proprietors or directors and the bank account.
  • Guidance on authentication and on the Digital Signature Certificate where it is needed.
  • Document review and upload.
  • Payment of the DGFT fee, after confirming the amount.
  • Tracking of the application, and response to any clarification raised by the DGFT.
  • Delivery of the IEC certificate as issued.
  • Guidance on annual update, and on follow-on steps such as ICEGATE, AD code, RCMC and LUT.

How the Process Works

We start with your product, the countries you deal with and your constitution. We then prepare a checklist and, after you send the documents, fill in the application and share the draft for your confirmation. We guide you through the authentication step, which has to be done by the applicant, and then submit the application and pay the fee. The DGFT may approve it directly or ask for clarification, which we handle. When the IEC is issued, we share the certificate and explain the annual update and the follow-on registrations. The time is usually short, but it depends on the DGFT and on the documents.

Important Considerations

  • The IEC is issued by the DGFT. We cannot guarantee it or the timeline.
  • Details such as name, address, directors and bank account should match PAN and other records, otherwise the application can be rejected.
  • Failure to update the IEC annually can result in it being made inactive, and shipments may be held up.
  • Restricted or prohibited items need separate licences, as the Foreign Trade Policy and other laws provide, and an IEC does not authorise them.
  • Replying to DGFT or customs notices is a separate service.

Business Context in Nagaur

💰 Pricing Considerations

Our professional fee depends on the type of applicant, the number of promoters or directors, whether a DSC is needed, whether branches are to be added, and whether you also want follow-on services such as ICEGATE registration, AD code, RCMC, GST LUT or export scheme applications. Government fees are separate. The DGFT charges a nominal fee for the application on its portal, which is notified by the DGFT and can change. DSC charges, bank certificate charges and other third-party costs are also separate. Replying to DGFT or customs notices is priced separately. Applicable statutory/government fees may vary based on jurisdiction, entity type and application details. Your professional fee quote is shared before work begins.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions & Local Advisory in Nagaur

📍 Includes 6 localized questions tailored specifically for Nagaur businesses

16 Q&As
Yes. An IEC is mandatory for any person or business entity engaged in export or import of goods. Without an IEC, the customs authority (ICEGATE) will not process any shipping bill (for export) or bill of entry (for import). Export finance from banks (packing credit, post-shipment credit, forward contracts) also requires an IEC. For Nagaur businesses in the Makrana marble sector that receive export orders, the IEC is the first and most fundamental requirement for shipping goods.
An IEC can be obtained from DGFT's online portal within 1-3 working days for complete applications. Documents required: PAN of the applicant (for proprietorship — proprietor's PAN; for company/LLP — entity PAN), bank certificate or cancelled cheque with the firm's name on the account, Aadhaar and PAN of the applicant/authorized signatory, address proof of the business, and a digital photograph. We submit the IEC application on the DGFT portal for Nagaur businesses and track it to issuance.
Yes. IEC can be obtained by sole proprietors — the IEC is issued in the proprietor's name linked to the business PAN. However, many international buyers, particularly in the B2B export market (granite, marble, textile, agro-commodities), strongly prefer dealing with registered companies rather than proprietorships for large-value contracts. We recommend that Nagaur exporters with significant export volumes consider incorporating as a Private Limited Company or LLP for greater credibility, while still obtaining the IEC in the new entity's name.
IEC details (address, bank account, authorised signatory) must be kept current on the DGFT portal. Any change must be updated through the IEC modification process on DGFT's portal. Outdated bank details in the IEC cause problems with export proceeds remittance through AD banks (Authorized Dealer banks), and outdated address causes issues with DGFT correspondence and RCMC (Registration Cum Membership Certificate) from export promotion councils. We update IEC details for Nagaur exporters whenever there are changes.
RCMC (Registration Cum Membership Certificate) is issued by export promotion councils (e.g., EPCH for handicrafts, AEPC for apparel, APEDA for agricultural produce, GJEPC for gems and jewellery). It is separate from IEC but required to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) — like duty drawback, RoDTEP scheme, Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) scheme, and advance authorisation for duty-free import of inputs. Nagaur exporters in the Makrana marble sector should obtain the relevant RCMC from their commodity's export promotion council after getting the IEC.
An IEC once issued is valid for the lifetime of the entity — it does not expire and does not need annual renewal. However, it must be updated on the DGFT portal annually (online confirmation between January and March of each financial year) to keep it active. If not updated, it is marked as inactive and exports/imports are blocked by customs. We remind Nagaur clients to complete the annual IEC update well within the deadline.
The Importer-Exporter Code is a 10-digit identification number issued by the DGFT under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992. It is linked to your PAN and is used by customs, banks and shipping lines to identify you in imports and exports.
A person who imports or exports goods for trade purposes generally needs one, including manufacturers, traders and e-commerce exporters. Service exporters do not need it just to export services, but need it to claim Foreign Trade Policy benefits, and banks or customers may ask for it.
Generally not just to export services. It is required if you wish to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. Many service exporters take one for convenience, and banks and customers sometimes ask for it.
No. It is a one-time registration, but the DGFT requires IEC holders to update their details on the portal once a year in the period notified, and an IEC that is not updated can be made inactive. We help you to keep it current.
Yes. Proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs, companies and other entities can apply with a valid PAN and a bank account in the business name. The IEC is linked to the PAN, and one PAN has one IEC.
You need PAN, identity and address proof of the applicant, constitution documents for entities, registered office proof with NOC if rented, a cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and a mobile number and email for verification. Some entities need a DSC.
We estimate 2 to 5 working days from receipt of complete documents. The DGFT's processing time and any clarification can affect it, and we cannot guarantee a timeline.
The DGFT charges a nominal application fee on its portal, which is notified by the DGFT and can change. We confirm the amount before you pay, and our professional fee is separate. DSC and bank certificate charges are also separate.
Depending on the business, you may need ICEGATE registration for customs filing, an AD code registered with customs for your bank, an RCMC from an export promotion council for certain benefits and a GST LUT to export without paying IGST. These are separate from the IEC.
No. The IEC identifies you as an importer or exporter, but restricted or prohibited items need separate licences or permissions under the Foreign Trade Policy and other laws. We advise on this before you begin.
